There are three CD-ROM versions -- what are the differences?

We have three version of Dragon's Lair available for CD-ROM -- the Dragon's Lair Deluxe Pack, Dragon's Lair Arcade Authentic and Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary Edition.  The Deluxe Pack includes Dragon's Lair, Space Ace and Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp.  The games contain all the scenes from the games but the video quality is not as good as the Arcade Authentic version and they play full screen within a window.  The Deluxe Pack is Windows 95/98/Me compatible but not Windows 2000 or XP compatible.

The Arcade Authentic version contains only Dragon's Lair but all moves, timing, scene order and scoring is identical to the arcade release.  The video quality is much better than the Deluxe Pack (but not as good as the DVD versions) and will play full screen without a window.  It also includes an arcade cabinet mode to simulate the look of the arcade machine and includes interviews with the creators of the game.   The Arcade Authentic version is Windows 95/98/Me/2000 and XP compatible.

The Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary Special Edition contains an upgraded version of Dragon's Lair Arcade Authentic in addition to Space Ace and Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp Arcade Authentic and is Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP compatible.

Hints

When playing Dragon's Lair remember that you control Dirk The Daring's reactions to the events that unfold throughout the game.  You don't directly control Dirk's movement but rather you must make the correct moves at the appropriate time for Dirk to survive the scene.   This means that just by pressing "Right" doesn't mean Dirk will move right.

When the game begins, Dirk walks over a drawbridge towards the castle but a board breaks and he falls through. As Dirk's hanging from the bridge, you must press the spacebar (to use the sword) to scare the tentacles away and run into the castle. If you continually get dragged into the water by the tentacles, you are not making the correct move, or you are not making the move at the correct time. Try pressing spacebar repeatedly when the game begins. At first you will hear "Bad Move Beeps" (low pitch) until it becomes the correct time for the Sword move to be made, at which time you'll hear a "Good Move Beep" (high pitch) meaning the correct move has been made and it is accepted. You should get past the tentacles and run into the castle. Once in the castle, you will need to make two "Right" moves to avoid the falling rocks.

Whenever you press a key there are two possible sounds you will hear from the computer: a low pitch beep means that you haven't made the correct move or that your timing is off; a high pitch beep means you have made the correct move and it has been accepted.

If you find that you are continually dying at a certain point in the game then you know that you must make a move just before this point.  You can try all of the five combinations (Up, Down, Left, Right, Sword) and one of them will work.  Sometimes the timing is tricky with several moves close together but if you watch the video closely and listen for "Good Beeps" then you notice when you've passed one move and need to make the next move.

DL 20th Anniversary playing only deaths

On some computers Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary Edition will skip ahead in the video and jump to the death sequences without allowing you to make any moves on some computers.  The problem is caused by third-party video playback codecs that have been installed in your computer.  Three confirmed problem-causing codecs are "SLD", "Elecard" and "MainConcept mpeg1/mpeg2 splitter" (included with Soundforge 7.0) -- if you have any one of these, uninstall them and the games should work for you.

We have a new version available for download that will solve the problem in most cases.  If you are still experiencing this problem, use can use mmview.exe to view all the the multimedia plug-ins in your computer and disable them.  Look for types "Codec(Video)" that are not from Microsoft and relate to mpeg1 playback and these may be the ones causing the problems.

The Correct Moves

The following are the correct moves for Dragon's Lair (Deluxe Pack V2.10).  We suggest you only read further if you're completely stuck on a move.  Note that many scenes can be played in "normal" and "reversed" (left to right).  If you're playing a reversed scene then all the Left and Right moves below should be reversed.

Windows 95/98/Me Compatibility

The Dragon's Lair Deluxe Pack, Arcade Authentic and Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary CD-ROM versions are compatible with Windows 95, 98, 98se and Me.

Windows 2000 Compatibility

The Dragon's Lair Deluxe Pack is not compatible with Windows 2000 and we don't expect to release any updates. Dragon's Lair Arcade Authentic version (CD-ROM) is Windows 2000 compatible. Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary CD-ROM is Windows 2000 compatible.

Windows XP Compatibility

The Dragon's Lair Deluxe Pack is not compatible with Windows XP and we don't expect to release any updates.  Dragon's Lair Arcade Authentic version (CD-ROM) now has a patch available from our Downloads page that makes it XP compatible.  Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary CD-ROM is XP compatible.

Invalid Page Fault in DLair.exe

Download the latest version of DirectX from the Microsoft web site ( click here ).

Movies will not play or missing DLL files (Deluxe Pack)

If you try to play the game and the movies will not play for you or your get errors in some of the system files like MSRLE32.DLL or MSVFW32.DLL, you may have problems with some of the drivers in your computer.   You can test movie playback by using the Media Player (Start>Programs>Accessories>Multimedia) and playing one of the AVI movies on the CD.  You should download the latest version of DirectX from the Microsoft web site ( click here ). You can also try downloading the latest Indeo driver from Intel ( click here ). If this doesn't correct the problem, you may have to reinstall Windows to correct the problem.

Game is playing by itself with no keyboard input (Deluxe Pack)

If the game is playing by itself with no keyboard input, you may be running on a machine that is too slow (for example, a 486) in which case you will notice a very low frame rate and out-of-sync audio, or you may be running on Windows NT (which is not supported).  If you are running on a slower machine such as a Pentium 75, you will probably not have enough processor power to play full screen and you may experience a very low frame rate and the game playing by itself.  In this case, try playing the program in the default (small) window.

If you are running Windows 2000 or XP, see above sections for more details.

Keyboard isn't responding (Deluxe Pack)

If the keyboard doesn't seem to be responding (always dying on the first move, not hearing any beeps when a directional key or space bar is pressed), you may have the NUMLOCK set the wrong way so try toggling it and trying again.  If this doesn't work, try using the separate cursor keys.  If you can get by the initial moves but are not getting any beeps, your internal PC speaker may not be working (the beep sounds come from the internal speaker, not your sound card).   Also, we have heard from some owners that selecting a four-button joystick in the Control Panel will cause the keyboard to not function -- try setting it to something else.

I hear a buzz from my computer/Intro doesn't start (Deluxe Pack)

Four or more button joysticks and gamepads seem to interfere with the keyboard reading causing the games to continually think that keys are being pressed.   This will cause the move beep to always play so you will hear a constant buzz sound coming from your computer (the move beeps are played back through the internal PC speaker).  You can try adjusting some of the parameters in the Joysticks Control Panel but in many cases the only solution is to uninstall your joystick.  If and when we have a new version that solves this, we will send an email to all registered owners so make sure you register your game (click on "Register" in the left menu column).   If you are using a Gravis GamePadPro, you must set the setting on the reverse side to GRIP and install the Gravis Utilities and calibrate it for Gravis Grip. You will proceed to get a test choice and then a calibration screen. It will work just like a joystick!

If this doesn't help, try going into the System-Hardware CD config and disable the read ahead feature. To do this: Go into MY COMPUTER>CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>PERFORMANCE TAB>FILE SYSTEM>CD ROM and you will see : "Optimize access pattern for:". At this point click the arrow and scroll through options and you will see "No - Read ahead". Select it and then click "Apply" And then exit out. You will need to restart your system after that change is made.

Game crashes when you press SpaceBar (Deluxe Pack)

If the game crashes when you press the Space Bar, you are likely playing in full screen mode without a window around the video.   Currently you must have a window around the video to avoid this problem so you should check in Start>Settings>Control Panels>Multimedia and make sure the "Video" tab is set to "Window" rather than "Full Screen".

Game doesn't auto-run when you insert the CD

If the program doesn't automatically run when you put the CD in your computer then the auto-run feature in your computer is probably not working.  You can still run the programs by double-clicking on "My Computer", then on your CD-ROM drive and then on executable program on the CD (either DL.exe or DLair.exe).

Save/Load: How does it work? (Deluxe Pack)

When using the Save/Load features, please be aware that the games will only save your location once you complete a level and will not save your position at a specific point within a level.

Can't Open AVI error (Deluxe Pack)

If you get a "Can't Open AVI" error it means that the drivers that tell the system they can play AVI files can't actually play AVI files when the games are requesting that they do so.  It seems to happen when multiple drivers have been installed which sometimes happens without you knowing it when certain applications are installed.  You can try downloading the latest Indeo driver from Intel ( click here ).  The other solution that has worked is to reinstall Windows.  When doing this, run the "Setup" program on the Windows  CD when you are already running and in Windows and your existing programs should remain fully installed after you reinstall Windows.

ReadySoft's Dragon's Lair and Space Ace

The main problem that seems to occur with the old ReadySoft versions is sound not playing especially with newer technology sound cards.   The new Digital Leisure versions in the Deluxe Pack are written for native Windows and don't have any sound problems.

Procedures for running the DOS versions under Windows 95

Your system must be setup for Expanded Memory. If you receive an error message indicating there is no EMS present you need to edit the CONFIG.SYS file.

- go to the DOS prompt
- type "edit c:\config.sys"
- make sure you have these two lines:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM
- make sure the line that loads in EMM386.EXE has RAM after it and not NOEMS
- if NOEMS is present then just replace it with RAM
- save any changes made and exit to WIN '95
- restart your computer for these changes to take affect

To Run under Windows 95:

If you want an ICON in Windows 95 that will run Dragon's Lair then you'll need to make a ShortCut to the game. To do this follow these Windows 95 instructions for setting up a shortcut:

To put a shortcut on the desktop

1) Click the item, such as a file, program, folder, printer, or computer, that you want to create a shortcut to.
2) On the File menu, click Create Shortcut.
3) Drag the shortcut icon onto the desktop.

(For more help with creating shortcuts, consult your Windows 95 Help Guide)

To Run in DOS Mode:

Dragon's Lair

- Click Start
- Choose Shutdown
- Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode
- From the cd-rom prompt type "dragon" then hit enter

Escape From Singe's Castle, Space Ace 2 and Dragon's Lair 3

Each of these programs were floppy-based releases by ReadySoft that consisted mainly of material from Dragon's Lair, Space Ace and Dragon's Lair II respectively that wasn't used in their floppy based releases of the original games.  With the exception of a few new scenes that ReadySoft created to tie the storyline together, all of the material in these games are included in the Digital Leisure versions of Dragon's Lair, Space Ace and Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp, all of which contain all of the scenes from the original laser-disc arcade releases.
